The ice cream festival will be back in Florence as it now represents a part of the Florentine culinary tradition.

Ice cream Festival in Florence

The first edition of this fest was hosted in 2010, this event dedicated to ice-cream obtained great success and interest and it’s now an itinerant manifestation; the 2017 edition of this kermesse was hosted not only in Italian cities such as Florence, Milan, Rome and Turin but also in some important European cities such as London, Warsaw and Hamburg.

This year, the fest started in April at Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, first of the six established stops.

In every selected city were hosted the best ice cream masters of all Europe who had to compare each other creating ice cream in its classic and original flavor.

The winners of the seven challenges will meet again in Florence (where the fest started) for the final challenge of the ice cream fest which will take place from the 14th to the 17th September in the beautiful Piazzale Michelangelo. In this amazing terrace that offers a breathtaking view, the best 16 ice cream masters of Europe will confront through their creations.

The finale of the fest will be presented in palazzo Vecchio, next to Uffizi gallery; the mayor will participate as well, to witness the international importance of this event. Florence boasts a great ice-cream tradition and it seems that this sweet food was created by a famous artist, Bernardo Buontalenti, in 1559 who created for the first time a cold cream made by milk, honey and yolks.

Story goes that this first ice cream was served during a Medici banquet; during that period Florence was the centre of Europe and the ice cream trend spread quickly not only in Italy but in other countries as France when Caterina De’ Medici brought it there.
